I teach Organic Chemistry labs, mostly, and enjoy working on developing new ways to teach Organic Chemistry to make it more interesting and applicable to the student's everyday lives. I love to teach Organic Chemistry, not only due to the interesting subject matter, but also for the excellent problem-solving skills that students learn by deducing unknown compounds and figuring out synthetic pathways. Some of the labs that I have been playing with involve using GC/MS to study reaction products from student-designed Nucleophilic Substitution reactions. Our Organic Staff is always investigating new ways to help students figure out the best way to identify an unknown organic compound. Along with the GC/MS, we have several other instruments(300MHz & 400 MHz NMR, ATR-FTIR) that are being used in a variety of ways to help our students determine what unknown compounds they have made or have been given by their friendly Instructors. If you have any ideas for great Organic Labs, please let me know because I'm always on the lookout for great ways to teach and excite students about Organic Chemistry! I am also involved with our Introductory Chemistry labs. Here, as well as in the Organic Chemistry labs, the challenge is to show students how chemistry can be exciting and relevant to every students life. Lastly, I've begun converting all lab-related documents into electronic copies that students can use online before, during, and after their labs. All student work is done electronically with laptops in lab and the use of a tablet computer for pre-lab discussion notes has turned the entire lab experience into an electronic form...no paper copies. Students seem to appreciate this due to the unending space that an electronic document gives them to when completing their lab reports. |
...and now for the photo album and other personal stuff! |

| I love skiing, playing basketball and golfing. But, nothing can beat the time I get to spend with my beautiful wife and two young boys. We have a great time relaxing in Vermont and had a wonderful time at my sister's wedding this summer! :) | ||
